Construction crews at Kansas University were racing the clock to have renovations completed before the start of classes. New classroom space was being constructed in Green Hall and Lindley Hall, and some work was also being completed in Chancellor Laurence Chalmers’ new offices.

Two 20-year-old men were arrested in Overland Park, Kansas, after police found 150 pounds of dynamite in the home of one of the men. The arrests were made after police received a tip that the explosives were to be used to destroy the city hall and other Overland Park buildings. The dynamite was believed to have been stolen from the Hayes Quarry and Concrete Company of Paola. According to officials, the amount of dynamite found would have been sufficient to blow up “a dozen city halls.” Residents had been evacuated from about 30 houses in the vicinity until Army explosives experts from Fort Riley determined that the cases of dynamite were not booby trapped.
