KU volleyball nips Lipscomb

? Kansas University senior Karina Garlington collected 20 kills, while junior Allison Mayfield had 17 in the Jayhawks’ 3-1 season-opening volleyball victory over Lipscomb on Friday at the Creighton Invitational.

Freshmen Caroline Jarmoc, Kara Wehrs and Brianne Riley were in the starting lineup as the Jayhawks rolled 32-30, 25-27, 25-22, 25-16.

Riley, a libero out of Benet Academy in Lisle, Ill., recorded a team-best 20 digs and also had a service ace. Wehrs, a setter out of Hampshire (Ill.) High, had 16 digs and 42 assists. Jarmoc, a middle blocker out of Calgary Alberta, Canada, had nine blocks and six kills. Freshman defensive specialist Jamie Mathieu also played for KU.

“I liked the way we came back after the break,” KU coach Ray Bechard said. “We played great late in set three and very well in set four. We got a lot from Karina (Garlington) and Allison (Mayfield) but we need more balance on offense. But it was a good win against a team that is going to win a lot of matches.”
