25 years ago: Wyandotte County judge recovering after falling off Lawrence bridge
Wyandotte County judge Lawrence G. Zukel was recovering at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was suffering severe back pain and “about two million mosquito bites” after falling off a bridge while on a foggy late-night walk. After lying under the bridge all night, unable to move, the judge was discovered in the morning by a construction worker.
Kansas University was setting another enrollment record for the fall, with 102 more Jayhawks in 1985 than in the Fall 1984 semester.
Lawrence city commissioners met with neighbors of various KU fraternity houses on ways to regulate beer sales and noisy parties. After heated discussion, commissioners instructed city staff to draft an ordinance that would regulate sale of beer at large gatherings and gather information on ways to control loud parties.
The annual birthday celebration of Alf M. Landon was canceled following the statesman’s recent fall at his home. Landon, who served as governor in 1933-37 and was the 1936 Republican nominee for president, was turning 98 on September 9. He had fallen at home on Aug. 20 and had complained of pain afterward.
