100 years ago: Cold snap hits Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily World for August 28, 1910: “There were a number of homes in Lawrence this morning where the extra blanket was tucked snugly around red chins, and where no preparations towards breakfast were made until hubby had hopped shiveringly out of bed and connected last year’s gas grate. After the bed room began to get warm, the rest of the family consented to get up and dress. Nor were those homes the only spot in town where fires were lighted this morning. In the county clerk’s office at the court house a small blaze burned cheerily about eight inches from the deputy’s chair…. Just two more weeks until the sound of the school bell will summon reluctant children from their summer vacation, and give their tired mothers a much needed rest. School opens on September 12 and examinations will begin a week earlier. Only a few pupils will have to take the examination, those who have moved into town from nonaccredited schools, and those who failed to ‘pass’ last spring. Children will probably be dismissed the first day to secure books and equipment.”
