25 years ago: Hall family donates $3 million to KU humanities programs

A fashion article described the latest in mid-80s clothing trends: Stirrup pants or leggings, paired with oversized sweaters and blouses. The sweaters were described as colorful, with elaborate “surface interest” – appliqués, knitted-in designs, animal motifs, cable knits, etc. Oversized blouses in colors like teal and fuschia were very popular, as were padded shoulders.

Kansas University Chancellor Gene Budig announced that the Hall family of Kansas City was donating $3 million to enrich KU humanities programs. The gift from the Hall Family Foundation, a private organization created by the family that founded Hallmark Cards, would bring to $5.5 million the funds raised for the humanities programs.

The Lawrence Social Security Administration office was included on a list of “offices most likely to be closed” in a legislative alert which had recently been published by the AARP.
