Officials add up damage from violent storms

? A night of torrential rain and powerful winds has taken a toll on a historic site and a university in northwest Kansas.

The Hays Daily News reports the roof on the visitors’ center at Historic Fort Hays was blown off in two places during Monday night’s storm. A residence hall at Fort Hays State University was also damaged.

Historic Fort Hays has been undergoing a makeover, with a grand opening of the upgrades at the 19th century Army post set for late September. The roof damage allowed water to pour into parts of the visitors’ center, but site administrator Bob Wilhelm says there was little damage to the newly remodeled interior.

Wiest Hall at Fort Hays State also had roof and water damage, and about 15 cars parked nearby were damaged by flying roofing material.
