40 years ago: Watchman finds noose hanging in Watson Library

The Executive Board of the University Daily Kansan met with the Kansas University Student Senate’s executive committee to discuss the allocation of student funds for the school newspaper. The UDK’s request for money for the 1970-71 academic year was $42,500. Several “problem points” for future financing were listed by the UDK’s representative, including the rising costs of materials and mandatory wage increases for state employees working at the University Printing Service.

A fire at a three-story apartment house located at 1247 Kentucky forced residents to evacuate just past midnight. The fire had started in a bed in an unoccupied apartment on the second floor. The apartment had just been vacated over the weekend.

A night watchman making his rounds in KU’s Watson Library was startled to find a hangman’s noose dangling from a ceiling beam. The noose was in a restricted-access mechanical room, and the watchman said it had not been there earlier in the day.
