40 years ago: City gains funds for Clinton Reservoir land acquisition
The new Lecompton Bridge was not expected to be open to general traffic until the middle of September. However, since the only work remaining was in the areas of approaches and painting, special arrangements had been made for school buses to carry Lecompton area students to their Perry schools beginning August 31.
The City of Lawrence received nearly $4 million in federal aid when the U.S. Senate passed the $5 billion public works appropriations bill. $2 million was earmarked for the North Lawrence Flood Control Levee which was already under construction. In addition, $1,960,000 was earmarked for land acquisition for Clinton Reservoir to be built just west of the city.
Tactics for garnering interest in women’s liberation were discussed at a meeting at the Kansas Union. The main area of controversy was how “radical” an image the women should project. A national women’s strike was coming up, and KU women were discussing how to mark the occasion.
