100 years ago: Former president Roosevelt to visit Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily World for August 23, 1910: “When ex-President Roosevelt comes to Kansas next week, he will visit Lawrence. Instead of spending Wednesday evening of next week as the guest of Kansas newspaper men in Osawatomie, Roosevelt will spend the night at the Stubbs home in Lawrence. ‘I asked ex-President Roosevelt several months ago to visit me when on his next western trip, and he accepted,’ said Governor Stubbs in response to a long distance query from the World this morning. ‘And I suppose he has remembered the invitation.’… A good crowd saw the first night base ball game ever played in the city of Lawrence and it was lost by the home team to the Cherokee Indians by a score of 9 to 3. That it is difficult to see the sphere or to gauge it accurately in batting, fielding or throwing is admitted by every one of the players today. The exhibition was not similar to the regular way the national pastime is played but is somewhat of a relative of indoor baseball. A larger ball is used, soft and covered with white oilcloth. In the course of the evening’s play four balls were used to insure keeping a white ball in play.”
