Over the Rainbow Doll Club met Aug. 12 at the home of Brenda Owens. Vera Piersee gave a lesson on vintage paper dolls. Piersee showed several examples of vintage paper dolls and reproduction of vintage paper dolls. The club will travel to Holton today to visit the doll museum and have high tea at Hotel Josephine. The club’s open meeting will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Lawrence Public Library. Guest speaker will Patti Joyce, who works with the Kansas City Toy and Miniature Museum doing doll repair. Members decided to do doll identification at 6 p.m. prior to the open meeting. Val Fittell won the door prize.

The University Bridge Club held its annual Party Bridge Membership Drive Aug. 14, with hosts Sadie Deaton, Dottie Miller, and Roz and Karen Zimmerer.

Blue winners were Steven Bogler, first; Alice Akin, second; Rhetta Jo Noever, third; Tom Waller, fourth; and Ray Ikenberry, fifth.

Pink winners were Florence McNicoll, first; Wanda Kring, second; Karen Zimmerer, third; Carol Smith, fourth; and Cathy Waller, fifth.

New memberships are available for couples playing party bridge, not duplicate bridge, with annual memberships available from Sept. 4, 2010, through Sept. 1, 2011. Party bridge is played each Saturday evening at the Kaw Valley Bridge Center with a spring and Christmas dinner event at local restaurants. Couples interested in joining may call R.J. The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club‘s game on Aug. 11 was a North American Pairs qualifying game and was directed by Chris Lane. North-South winners were Chris Lane and Patricia Lechtenberg, first in A and B; Eldon Herd and Charles Hedges, second in A and B; Kent McCullough and John Fittell, third in A; John Oxley and partner, fourth in A; Eleanor Patton and Jan O’Connor, third in B and first in C; Dick Shaffer and Angie Davidson, second in C; and Nita Scales and Lester Dalton, qualified in B.

East-West winners were Paul Heitzman and David Piro, first in A; Craig Huneke and Jeremy Martin, second in A, and first in B and C; Sally Taylor and Yvonne Hedges, third in A and second in B; Steven Vossler and Klee Zaricky, fourth in A; Mona Bell and Carol Ball, third in B and second in C; and Catherine Blumenfeld and Grant Sutton, qualified in B.

The Thursday Morning Mentor Duplicate Bridge Club‘s game on Aug. 12 was directed by Lester Dalton. Winners were Angie Davidson and Lester Dalton, first; Debbie Bettinger and Barbara Figgins, second; Bob Hemenway and Eldon Herd, third; Patricia Lechtenberg and Shirley Reese, fourth; and Hanni Zellmann and Chris Lane, fifth.

The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club‘s game on Aug. 13 was a North American Pairs qualifying game and was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Grant Sutton and Sidney Sutton, first in A and B; Steven Vossler and Larry Weatherholt, second in A; Catherine Blumenfeld and Lynn Hui, third in A, second in B and first in C; Virginia Seaver and Charles Hedges, qualified in A; and Eldon Herd and Jean Otney, qualified in B.

East-West winners were David Piro and Paul Heitzman, first in A; Klee Zaricky and Sally Taylor, second in A and first in B; Jack Flickinger and Dick Shaffer, third in A, second in B and first in C; Shirley Reese and Yvonne Hedges, third in B; and Jan O’Connor and Ann Thompson, qualified in B and C.

The Monday Evening Duplicate Bridge Club‘s game on Aug. 16 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Steven Vossler and Larry Weatherholt, first in A; Virginia Seaver and Craig Huneke tied for second in A with Bobby Patton and Grant Sutton; Patton and Sutton, also placed first in B; and Vince Nordberg and Jim Stewart, first in C.

East-West winners were John Fittell and Ed Howard, first in A; Eleanor Patton and Richard Ray, second in A, and first in B and C; and Don Bush and Don Childers, second in B.
