Charges filed in downtown stabbing incident
Douglas County prosecutors have charged a 39-year-old man with aggravated battery after a 45-year-old Lawrence man was stabbed early Friday in downtown Lawrence.
Prosecutors filed the charge Friday afternoon against Earl Wayne Silmon of Lawrence, who was arrested near 10th and Massachusetts streets at 2:30 a.m.
Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said the two men were acquaintances and began arguing and fighting in the 900 block of Massachusetts Street. The 45-year-old man tried to get away and ran south, but at 10th and Massachusetts streets, the fighting continued and the victim was stabbed, police said.
The victim was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where he was treated and later released. Police recovered a knife at the scene, Sarna said.
A judge Friday afternoon set Silmon’s bond at $7,500 and ordered him to have no contact with the victim or any witnesses in the case. His next court appearance is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
