KU football coach Turner Gill: Aug. 17

Kansas football coach Turner Gill talks to reporters before practice on Aug. 17, 2010.

The Kansas University football team welcomed the media to campus before Tuesday's practice and KU coach Turner Gill shared some news about his team before practice began.

Here are the highlights:

  • Red-shirt freshman linebacker Jacoby Thomas has been removed from the team for academic reasons. Thomas, whom Gill said was battling for legitimate playing time, becomes the second academic casualty this spring, as defensive end Travis Stephens was kicked off the squad at the start of fall camp, also for academic reasons. The loss of Thomas, 6-1, 243 from Texarkana, Texas, leaves an even bigger hole at linebacker for the Jayhawks, who recently lost sophomore Huldon Tharp to a season-ending foot injury.

  • Gill also announced Tuesday that true freshman Ed Fink, also a linebacker, would miss the 2010 season because of injury. That leaves the Jayhawks with Drew Dudley, Steven Johnson and Justin Springer as the only known commodities at linebacker. Gill said red-shirt freshman Steve Mestan has looked good during the last couple of weeks and likely has played himself into the top four or five in the linebacker rotation.

  • No news on the quarterback battle between sophomore Kale Pick and red-shirt freshman Jordan Webb. Gill said the staff was still in a heavy evaluation period at that position — as well as most others — and that a decision would likely be made sometime next week as the team begins preparation for its Sept. 4 season opener. However, Gill maintained his stance that the naming of a starting QB could go down to the day before the opener.

  • A pair of walk-ons got some great news this week, as offensive lineman Alex Smith and wide receiver Reece Petty both earned scholarships for the 2010 season, Gill announced Tuesday. Gill said a number of factors went into the decision to award Smith and Petty — both seniors — the scholarships. At the top of the list, however, were strong work ethic, outstanding academic standing and the fact that, as seniors, they've shown great loyalty to the KU program.

I'm sure Kale appreciates his picture underneath that headline.

One of the hardest parts of being a college football fan is watching guys not make it. Sometimes we've been watching these players since they were juniors in high school. It always sucks seeing them fail out academically, fail to adapt to the college game, or get in trouble with the law. Every team in college football has lost some incredible athletes who just couldn't cut it (usually academically or behaviorally) at this level. I still shake my head every time I think of Brandon Duncan and Jacques Crawford, what a waste of talent.

She's also recording what he's saying on her cell or recorder so I think she's a little interested but might not want her face to the camera.

I see two men looking at the ground does that also mean they have a who cares attitude? I think you are reading something into a photo that does not exist.

She needs to sacrifice a young goat on an altar as it is a football event.

Kicking players off for grades is commendable, until KU goes a few years without making a bowl.

Play ineligible players (or even keep them on the roster) and you get whacked by the NCAA.

How do players get kicked for academic reasons before the semester even begins? Was it a summer school performance issue?

I hope the best for Coach Gill, but I keep fearing the worst... This is the lowest the interest in KU football has been since Coach Roy forced the hire of Terry Allen who then went on to almost single-handedly kill KU Football.

At least we won't have it as bad as Texas Tech. To go from putting up 600 - 800 yards of offfense and tons of points to running the ball and hopefully scoring two touchdowns. It's going to be a very long season for KU fans or short if we're out of it after 3-4 games.

Wow such negativity before the season has even begun. Way to give the guys a chance before you become overly critical. Are you a fan redlegs or just a whiner sitting in front of their half empty glass? I agree with edjayhawk-this team will be presented as players who are lead by a coach who cares more about ethics and integrity than bending the rules to win games that may not matter in the end after they are deemed a forfeit once the NCAA finds players to be inelligible for play.

KU needs a coach like Gill right now. I don't care how many games KU wins and long as there isn't there aren't the massive embarrassments of the recent past - well, for the next few years at least. First things first, clean house, get the players to fit the system, and then go get 'em.

Rock Chalk.

Amen! You gotta clean the debris before you can rebuild. Who knows what will happen this year in particular.. but I think in the coming years they'll grow much stronger and given time (if the athletic department is wise enough to hold on to Gill) they've got a great shot at becoming a powerhouse- with a different class of team (as a whole) than we've seen in the recent few years.

Maybe not. You may want to read that paragraph again.
