This fall, sharp silhouettes from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s are popping up all over. Both on the runway and on the street, style gurus are looking to the past for the perfect dress decorum. Read on for some modern takes on these classic, timeless trends that are in style right now.

’50s silhouettes:

Look out for curve-enhancing skirts and tops and Christina Hendricks-esque get-ups for every shape and size. For an updated ’50s look, concentrate on building a wardrobe of separates. Think below-the-knee pencil skirts, pleated circle-skirts, pony-tails, knit tops and (hello, it is 2010) bustiers! Check out Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Prada Fall 2010 for excellent inspiration pieces to get you going.

’60s silhouettes:

Open your eyes to a whole new world of jeans — set down your skinny jeans (notice I did not say give them up) and shimmy into a pair of bell-bottoms. That’s right folks, flare jeans are back (thank you, Miu Miu). Also, consider shifting your floral-print skirts and dresses to slightly more psychedelic colors and designs — but this advice, too, must be taken with caution. Opt for mod-style patterns and shapes for the most elegant reincarnation of the fashion of the ’60s.

’70s silhouettes:

All of your favorite fabrics and flowing, soft shapes are back in style, straight from the ’70s. Fill your wardrobe with neutral colors and pastels for the ultimate feminine look. Pick out caramel-colored blouses with built-in scarves, long, fabulous trousers with tie-waists and oversized, gold accessories. Pair this sensual color palette with brown leather pumps and purses for an understated but glamorous outfit. Check out Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2010 for excellent interpretations of the modern, stylish-’70s trend.

Fur:

Fur is an enormous trend this year, a trend that has weaved in and out of every decade, promoting itself to a position of seniority. This year, fur will cover everything from vests to coats, purses to booties — in all different colors and varieties. If you do decide to don a fur, do keep in mind its ostentatious nature. I mean, come on, it’s hard to inconspicuously sport a fur of any shape or form. This fall, for me, the vest is my fur shape-of-choice. It is a statement piece, but it can still be easily integrated into my wardrobe, dressed up with a belt and heels. If fur is a ‘do’ for you, definitely consider the most practical, glamorous piece for you. Check out Fall 2010 lines by Fendi, Gucci, Armani, Proenza Schouler and Viktor & Rolf for some of my favorite runway pieces.
