40 years ago: Bomb scare delays plane of officials arriving for Lake Perry dedication

A bomb scare delayed the arrival of several Kansans coming from Washington for the dedication of the Lake Perry Dam. A plane carrying the chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission as well as Sen. Bob Dole and Rep. Larry Winn received a bomb threat and the plane had to return to Dulles, where a search uncovered nothing.

In spite of earlier predictions of decreased freshman enrollment at Kansas University, local landlords were optimistically looking forward to a good year. Some developments had been filled since May and June, and others were expected to be filled, or nearly filled, by the end of August.

A fund-raising campaign had been initiated in Lawrence by the Lawrence Branch of Concerned Black Parents. The purpose was to provide scholarships and motivation for black high school students and to help them in their education at the high school level, at a vocational school, or at college.
