3 suspects arrested in home burglary

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers foiled a home burglary about 5 miles west of Lawrence on Friday night as they responded to a security system alarm.

Officers arrested three Topeka residents in connection with the burglary at a residence near East 500 Road and U.S. Highway 40.

Sgt. Steve Lewis, a sheriff’s spokesman, said that when officers arrived shortly after midnight Saturday they discovered a vehicle backed up to the garage door. Deputies began questioning two people inside the vehicle when a third person came out of the house.

The homeowners were out of state at the time. Deputies arrested on charges of burglary and criminal damage the three suspects: 54-year-old Randy Ridens, 22-year-old Chad Hewitt and 18-year-old Shanea Roney, all of Topeka.

The suspects have been charged in Douglas County District Court.
