40 years ago: Housing project approved for construction

The Lawrence Local Housing Authority had received word from the Department of Housing and Urban Development that plans for a city-sponsored low-rent housing project were approved for construction. The project called for the construction of 130 units of general occupancy housing on the east side of Haskell north of 19th Street.

Meanwhile, a local architectural firm was working on drawings for the city library, but some owners on Kentucky Street were refusing to sell to the city for the appraised price. The library was expected to be ready for construction contract in November and was expected to take more than a year to build.

Four persons, one a juvenile, were arrested by Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies on check charges. The juvenile was charged with forging a name on a $15 check and attempting to pass it at a Lawrence business.
