25 years ago: Marijuana field near Baldwin raided

The location of a proposed Douglas County industrial park was still being negotiated, but some hints were surfacing which indicated a possible site north or east of Lawrence.

A marijuana raid yielded 751 cultivated plants in an area northeast of Baldwin. The officers went into a heavily wooded area two or three miles southeast of Vinland, near Douglas County State Lake, and seized $1.5 million worth of plants, some with three-inch diameter stalks. Twenty plots were found, along with some irrigation equipment. The raid, which involved the KBI, the county sheriff’s department, and Lawrence police officers, was part of a federal program that was designed to eradicate marijuana fields. The area raided was adjacent to another area which had been raided on July 19, where 459 plants had been found.
