40 years ago: Questionnaires about recent unrest distributed

A five-person team from the President’s Commission on Campus Unrest, in town to investigate recent violent events in Lawrence, began distributing a questionnaire with questions such as, “In your opinion, what do you feel is causing the tension and unrest in Lawrence?” Another question asked about the role that “domestic and/or international problems” had played.

City and state residents were expected to have to pay nearly $17,000 in overtime for law enforcement officers who worked extra time during the July disturbances in Lawrence.

Kansas University was expecting a decrease in freshman enrollment in the fall. Chancellor Laurence Chalmers attributed the loss to the opening of the junior college in Johnson County and to economic hardships which were causing students to attend college nearer to their hometowns.
