25 years ago: Definition of ‘day’ defined

Ace Johnson, owner of the Sanctuary at 1401 W. Seventh, was in disagreement with John Lamb, director of the Kansas Alcohol Beverage Control Division, about the definition of a ‘day.’ Lamb claimed that the ABC had a long-standing policy that defined a ‘day’ as the period from a club’s opening to its normal closing time. Johnson argued that the policy had been ‘midnight to midnight’ for years. The definition was important because of the law banning the sale of drinks at a reduced price after midnight. (Private clubs in Lawrence were open until 3 a.m. in 1985.) Johnson held that since a new day began at midnight, he could legally sell drinks for a different price at that time.

The Student Loan Marketing Assn (Sallie Mae) was still planning a new 50,000-square-foot regional office building in Lawrence in spite of the fact that they did not qualify for industrial revenue bonds.

A powerful thunderstorm knocked out electricity to about 2,000 Lawrence residents for as long as 3 1/2 hours.
