Pantry to distribute fresh food on Monday

Just Food of ECKAN will receive a truckload of fresh food Monday from Harvesters Community Food Network of Kansas City, Mo.

The Mobile Food Pantry distribution begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m. or until the food runs out. It takes place in the food bank’s parking lot, 1200 E. 11th St.

Carolyn Ward, director of planning for ECKAN, said food bank workers never know what kind of food they are receiving in advance, but it is perishable food that is just beginning to ripen.

There is no income requirement to receive food, but recipients must reside in Douglas County.

The distribution serves about 250 families on the second Monday of each month.

Ward said ECKAN’s pantry supplies are low, which is typical this time of year. It provides food and other items for a number of agencies and shelters in the county.

The pantry accepts food and cash donations. To donate money, visit justfoodfund.org.

Its donation wish list: pork and beans, pasta sauce, canned pasta, canned tomatoes, canned beans, canned soup, canned fruit, cereal, canned meats, rice, condensed milk, dry milk, flour, peanut butter, jelly, diapers, laundry detergent and toilet paper.
