An excellent turnout was expected as Douglas County voters began going to the polls to vote in the primary elections for party nominees for state and county offices.

An article outlined the recent changes in mobile home parks, where the homes were no longer referred to as “trailers.” The old versions had been about eight to 10 feet wide, but the newer versions were 12 to 14 feet wide, and some had even incorporated two units joined together to form a “double wide.” Hundreds of new units were expected to soon be available in Lawrence if all the planned new courts and expansion plans at existing courts were carried out.

Hurricane Celia had made landfall near Corpus Christi, Texas, as a strong Category Three hurricane with 145 mph winds, causing several fatalities and wiping out many small towns on its way.
