Schmidt defeats DeZago in GOP race for attorney general, will face Steve Six

State Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt has won the Republican primary for Kansas attorney general. Schmidt, from Independence, defeated Junction City prosecutor Ralph DeZago in Tuesday's primary. As of 9:40 p.m. Schmidt led with 77 percent of the vote, 99,769 votes to DeZago's 29,293.

Schmidt will run in November's general election against Democratic incumbent Steve Six, who had no primary opposition. Six was appointed Kansas attorney general in January 2008, after his predecessor resigned because of a sex scandal.

With 2,751 of 3,316 precincts reporting, Derek Schmidt has 187,629 total votes as of 11:20 p.m., good for 77 percent. Ralph DeZago holds 54,800 votes.

11:03 p.m. update

Schmidt has 183,436 votes as of 11:05 p.m., good for 78 percent. DeZago has 53,318 votes.

10:45 p.m. update

Schmidt holds 169,353 votes, which is 78 percent. DeZago has 49,138 votes.

Schmidt has 164,953 total votes to DeZago's 47,942, 2,135 of 3,316 precincts reporting.

10:08 p.m. update

Derek Schmidt holds 123,946 votes over DeZago's 36,300 with 1,463 of 3,316 precincts reporting.

Derek Schmidt has been declared the winner. As of 9:40 p.m. Schmidt led with 77 percent of the vote, 99,769 votes to DeZago's 29,293.

With 868 of 3,316 precincts reporting, Schmidt still holds 78 percent of votes over DeZago.

Schmidt has 64,344 (78%) votes, leading DeZago, who has 18,178 (22%) with 511 of 3,316.

Schmidt leads DeZago, 61,274 (78%) - 17,286 (22%), 466 of 3,316 precincts reporting.

Schmidt holds 79 percent of the vote, leading DeZago 49,970-13,659 with 289 of 3,316 precincts reporting.

With 157 of 3,316 precincts reporting, Scmidt leads DeZago with 78 percent of the vote, 27,347-7,594.

Schmidt continues to lead DeZago with 79 percent of the vote, 24,749-6,794.

Schmidt leads DeZago by a sizable margin as of 8 p.m., 1877-724.

As of 7:20 p.m., Derek Schmidt is leading Ralph DeZago 178-14 in the Republican race for Kansas attorney general.
