Lawrence police have arrested a 28-year-old Lawrence man in connection with a Sunday morning shooting at a south Lawrence apartment complex that injured eight people.

Capt. Tarik Khatib said officers served a search warrant at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in a residence in the Gaslight Village mobile home park, 1900 W. 31st St.

He said the suspect was at the residence they searched and arrested without incident.

The suspect was booked into the Douglas County Jail on six counts of attempted second-degree murder. Khatib said after further investigation officers determined six people were either wounded by bullets or were in the flight path of a bullet.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said his office hopes to make a decision about filing official charges Wednesday. The Journal-World generally does not name suspects unless they are officially charged.

Investigators during the search have recovered a handgun they believed was used. The gun will be tested further for evidence, Khatib said.

Police said preliminary reports indicated an unidentified man standing outside an apartment at The Exchange, a complex at 3100 Ousdahl Road, fired a handgun into the apartment, striking several people. The shooting occurred about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Officers said the incident stemmed from a verbal altercation earlier in the evening at the residence. Witnesses have said there was a party in the apartment that night.

Police identified eight people who had either a gunshot wound or wounds associated with flying debris. None of the injuries was considered life-threatening, and officers said all victims are expected to make a full recovery.

Police said the suspect was seen leaving the area with a group of people in an unidentified car. Khatib said no one else was in custody Tuesday night, but he said the investigation was continuing.

Khatib said detectives and officers followed several leads since Sunday morning, interviewing victims and dozens of witnesses and traveling to several jurisdictions to recover evidence.
