25 years ago: Development of youth playing fields in SW Lawrence in the works
Sports enthusiasts were continuing their long-range fundraising efforts in Lawrence. Youth Sports Inc. was planning to develop playing fields on a 55-acre site a quarter-mile south of Clinton Parkway and Wakarusa Drive. City officials and Lawrence residents were also trying to raise about $500,000 of private funds to match that amount in bonds which voters had approved for a sports complex in Holcom Park.
Culture Farms Inc. filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy law. The petition was filed in Topeka on the same day that a group of investors had filed a suit in Kansas City seeking to force the company into involuntary bankruptcy and liquidating its assets.
Area crops were in excellent shape, according to area county extension agents. About 60 percent of the field corn crop was in the dough stage, when soft kernels have formed on the cobs. About 50 percent of the soybean fields were flowering and setting pods.
