40 years ago: 3 candidates compete in 1st district GOP county commission race

A three-way race had developed in the Republican primary for the first district county commissioner’s seat. Opponents were Ernest Pulliam, Carl Amerine, and Jack Tatum. The race was judged to be fairly even so far, and all three men had been conducting vigorous campaigns.

Some Lawrence residents might have been among the 20,000 people attending a rock festival in northeast Iowa over the weekend. Another music festival, the Powder Ridge Rock Festival, was scheduled to take place in Middlefield, Connecticut, but the 15,000 to 18,000 young people who showed up there learned that a court order had blocked performances by advertised groups Richie Havens, Chuck Berry and Sly and the Family Stone.

In Mississippi, the U.S. District Court ruled that state laws banning the marriage of persons of different races were unconstitutional. The Southern National Party had obtained an injunction against the marriages, contending that they would violate state laws.
