25 years ago: Independence Days festival deemed success
Ten investors charged Lawrence firm Culture Farms, Inc., with reneging on its agreements to buy cultures and issuing them bad checks totaling more than $9,000. The firm had closed in June after it was ruled that they were using an illegal investment contract. The investors were asking a federal bankruptcy judge in Kansas City, Kansas, to declare the company bankrupt and liquidate its assets to pay creditors.
The “housing shuffle” was underway in Lawrence, resulting in a busy week for local truck-rental companies, city sanitation workers, and utility services. The KPL Gas Service office was receiving 500 customer service calls per day for electrical service.
Organizers from Lawrence’s Independence Days presented final figures from the recent festival. It was judged a financial success, having made a profit of about $6,000 which would be used as “seed money” for the next year. About 1,500 community volunteers helped to increase these figures by buying tickets even though they were working at the festival. Also, about 40 local businesses each purchased between 50 and 250 tickets for their employees. About 20,000 people attended the two-day festival.
