100 years ago: Bodies of drowned men sent to Fort Leavenworth

From the Lawrence Daily World for August 1, 1910:

“The second death from Infantile Paralysis in this county occurred at Vinland early Thursday morning. Gertrude, the ten year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Vitts living northeast of Vinland, succumbed to the disease after a sickness lasting only five days. Dr. C. B. Miller, the attending physician, diagnosed the attack immediately but was unable to check its ravages….

The bodies of three privates of Co. L, Harvey L Cox, James M. Higgins, and Lindsley Seidel, who were drowned in the Kaw late Saturday afternoon, were shipped to Ft. Leavenworth for burial today. The three men were drowned almost opposite Victor Park, where they went with a dozen or more companions for a short swim before supper. The drownings make four lives which the treacherous Kaw has claimed in the vicinity of Lawrence during July….

Following its usual policy the World will endeavor to supply its subscribers with prompt and complete elections returns tomorrow evening. Neither the Bell Telephone Company nor the Western Union will receive returns this year so additional difficulty will be experienced in handling the results over the county and state.”
