Police arrest two after burglary, foot chase

• Two Lawrence men were arrested early Thursday morning after breaking into a downtown business and leading police on a brief foot chase.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman, the incident occurred about 3 a.m. in the 800 block of New Hampshire Street. Bordman said a neighbor in the area had heard the sound of breaking glass and had called the police.

Officers arrived at Cielito-Lindo Mexican Restaurant, 815 New Hampshire St., and discovered a second-story window had been broken. As police were observing the building, two men, both 21 years old, were seen exiting the business. They took off running eastbound from the establishment.

Bordman said officers engaged in a brief foot chase and were able to catch the two suspects within a few minutes in the 800 block of Rhode Island Street.

Both men were taken into custody about 3:13 a.m. and are being charged with burglary, possession of stolen property, obstruction of legal procedure and criminal damage.

Police were able to recover property that was stolen during the incident.

• A 32-year-old Lawrence man reported Tuesday the theft of a moped from the 800 block of Rhode Island Street. The incident occurred between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesday. The estimated property loss was $3,000.
