• Two Lawrence men were arrested early Thursday morning after breaking into a downtown business and leading police on a brief foot chase.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman, the incident occurred about 3 a.m. in the 800 block of New Hampshire Street. Bordman said a neighbor in the area had heard the sound of breaking glass and had called the police.

Officers arrived at Cielito-Lindo Mexican Restaurant, 815 New Hampshire St., and discovered a second-story window had been broken. As police were observing the building, two men, both 21 years old, were seen exiting the business. They took off running eastbound from the establishment.

Bordman said officers engaged in a brief foot chase and were able to catch the two suspects within a few minutes in the 800 block of Rhode Island Street.

Both men were taken into custody about 3:13 a.m. and are being charged with burglary, possession of stolen property, obstruction of legal procedure and criminal damage.

Police were able to recover property that was stolen during the incident.

I heard they were just trying to check up on illegal alien activity.

Will the break-ins wave downtown stop now?

bromidrosis, I bet these "nice fellows" may have thought the restaurant was still open. They window broke from them simply trying to enter the "open" restaurant (according to them). I'm not sure if I would compare the LPD to Barney Fife as much as Ralph Furley.

Just goes to prove that Mexican food ranks right up there with doughnuts.

surprise surprise surprise...a transient. who will be the pied piper to lead this infestation out of our town?

My guess; since K2 has been forced underground the cost for it has tripled and now people have to rob to afford it! BTW Cielito-Lindo has the best chicken fajitas (although you have to pay almost $2 extra for shredded cheese and that is kind of cheap) in Lawrence and their salsa rocks as well!!!

Why buy k2 underground when it's easier to get the real thing?

borderline, dude.

that's what I was thinking!!! I wonder if these two are the ones that have been taking up residence as our downtown burglars?

Clumsy enough to slip and break a window, but able enough to take off running? I know LPD has their moments that bring about doubt, but I see no reason to berate them for doing their job well in this situation? Even if your homeboys were in the wrong place at the wrong time, they should have stayed put and explained that they "slipped" and broke the glass.... on the second story...... before attempting to elude police with stolen property......

I was in Boy Scouts with both of these guys when we were kids. They must have been chasing a lost kitty or something, and followed it into the building to save it and take it back to it's owner. Maybe that's the stolen property they're referring to. Someone's cat went missing, and they rescued it. They were so happy that they went running, with the cat, back to the owner's house to present them with their findings!! Yeah, that's it. That's exactly what happened.

HELLO!?! Isn't anyone reading...

"neighbor in the area had heard the sound of breaking glass and had called the police. "

The NEIGHBOR deserves the thanks... the cops were just doing their job! More citizens needs to call the cops when they suspect something!!!!

yeah spunkey, but i would have called the cops, THEN put on a mask and cape and apprehended the criminals myself and left them tied up waiting for the cops. the citizen could have done a LITTLE more.
