The University Bridge Club announces results of its April 17 meeting with hosts Harold and Donna Riehm.

Blue winners were Virginia Williams, first; Janet Dunn, second; George Bocquin, third; Al Smith, fourth; and John Golden, fifth.

Pink winners were Alice Akin, first; Donna Gatts, second; Edna Galle, third; Mary Jo Spotts, fourth; and Lois Liebert, fifth.

The Lawrence Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club joined forces with the Kansas Alpha Chapter at Kansas University on March 2 for this year’s Fraternity Day of Service. Members had a chance to listen to Dr. Jean Harty, the co-founder of Reach Out and Read Kansas City, an organization that promotes children’s literacy.

This year, Pi Phi partnered with First Book, a group that provides books for children in need, for the “Make Your Mark for Literacy” campaign. The goal is to donate another 50,000 books. For every bookplate decorated, a child will receive a brand-new book from First Book.

The evening concluded with a Speed Read, a competition between alumnae and collegians, to see who could read the most words from a Dr. Seuss book in 30 seconds. All proceeds from the event went to First Book.

The Monday Evening Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on April 19 utilized the Howell movement and was directed by Virginia Seaver. Peter Petillo and David Piro tied in first place with Vince Nordberg and Jim Stewart. Other winners were Virginia Seaver and Craig Huneke, third; and Jerry Sloan and Lois Clark, fourth.

The Kaw Valley Bridge Club held its annual organization meeting on April 17. This year it utilized the Swiss Team format and was directed by Chris Lane. Fourteen teams competed in the all day event. Team winners were Brian Barrett, Peter Petillo, Larry Weatherholt and Steven Vossler, first; Jim Stewart, Vince Nordberg, Kathryn Loseke and Shari Krentzel, second; Jan O’Connor, Lois Clark, Barbara McCorkle and Virginia Johnston, third; Donna Munson, Patricia Lombardi, Julia Dalton and Lester Dalton, fourth; and Jerry Sloan, Craig Huneke, Emily Foster and Jim Zhang, fifth.

The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on April 16 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Steven Vossler and Larry Weatherholt, first in A; Grant Sutton and Kent McCullough, second in A; Chris Lane and Shirley Reese, third in A and first in B; Dianne Childs and Mona Bell, fourth in A and second in B; and Dick Shaffer and Jack Flickinger, third in B and first in C.

East-West winners were Vince Nordberg and Jim Stewart, first in A, B and C; Jerry Sloan and Dave Chipman, second in A; Sally Taylor and Yvonne Hedges, third in A and second in B; and Patricia Lechtenberg and Jan O’Connor, fourth in A, third in B and second in C.

The Thursday Morning Mentor Duplicate Bridge Club’s game of April 15 was directed by Chris Lane. Winners were Chris Lane and Becky Mullins, first; Patricia Lechtenberg and Virginia Seaver second; and Jean Khatib and Jan O’Connor, third.

The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game of April 14 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Mary Fenlon and Janice Hollowell, first in A; Vince Nordberg and Steven Vossler, second in A; Betty Collier and Virginia Eddy, third in A and first in B; Jan O’Connor and Virginia Johnston, fourth in A, second in B, and first in C; and Sally Taylor and Yvonne Hedges, third in B.

East-West winners were Lois Clark and Shirley Reese, first in A and B; Judy Bevan and Shari Krentzel, second in A and B; David Piro and Paul Heitzman, third in A; Grant Sutton and Catherine Blumenfeld, fourth in A and third in B; Mona Bell and Carol Ball, fourth in B and first in C; and Gary Joyce and Ann Thompson, second in C.
