Pedal Against Hate event set for May 1

A partnership of Lawrence social organizations will host an event that combines an anti-hate message with a bike ride through Lawrence.

The inaugural Pedal Against Hate Community Bike Ride will begin at 11 a.m. May 1 at the Islamic Center of Lawrence, 1917 Naismith Drive.

Bicyclists will ride to South Park where Ed Chasteen, a retired professor of sociology from William Jewell College, will tell about his experience of biking from Disney World to Disneyland, and about how the journey taught him to “like other people.”

For people unable to ride in the event, Chasteen’s speech is expected to begin about 11:45 a.m. Snacks also will be provided.

The event is free and open to the public. The event is being hosted by The Lawrence Alliance, The Islamic Center of Lawrence, the Interfaith Initiative, and Culturally Speaking, an organization that recently moved from Kansas City to Lawrence and works to create interactions among people of different faiths and cultures.
