Lawrence police Wednesday morning located a vehicle that fits the description of an SUV suspected to be involved in an overnight crash at Taco Bell, 1408 West 23rd St.

Officers locate vehicle that potentially struck Taco Bell

Lawrence police have found the vehicle that may have struck Taco Bell, 1408 West 23rd St., around 2 a.m. Wednesday. Enlarge video

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl the incident occurred about 2 a.m. Hadl said the vehicle, a burgundy late-model Jeep Cherokee, careened southbound and went straight into the north wall of the business.

The driver of the Jeep then backed the vehicle up and took off. It is unknown if there were any other passengers in the vehicle. Police obtained video from the Taco Bell security cameras and used that to help determine the vehicle's registration.

Police located the maroon Jeep Cherokee they believe to be involved in the crash on Clifton Court, just northwest of the Taco Bell.

Police issued 20-year-old Lawrence resident Jason Gillam citations for failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.

Hadl said debris from the Jeep was trailing away from the scene in a westward pattern.

The Jeep drove into the wall directly outside the bathroom area of the business. Hadl said no one had been in the bathroom and no one had been injured in the incident.

Hadl said damage to the suspect's vehicle included heavy driver's side damage, as well as heavy damage to the right front headlight and turn signal.

Police continue to investigate the incident.

SUVs 2; Lawrence establishments 0. We're under attack.

ps, 40 years from now they'll be calling this the Spring of violence in Lawrence, when a group of suburban yuppies and their children declared war on our drink and our food. When will the mayor call in the National Guard? I'll protect Dempsey's until I can stand no longer . . .

Au Contraire,

An outbreak of buildings colliding with autos in Larryville?

Methinks a rush to judgement.

i'm very fearful that I'll wake up any day to find my apartment embedded in the grill of my truck.

We need to fund a study as to why buildings are suddenly acting like this.

Boeing 5 years, 1 month ago

Must agree with independant. Much like the train attacks the car on the tracks, the stationary building does indeed pull the SUVs into its web of cinder block and lumber.

This aggression will not stand! Give me Nachos Bell Grande, or give me death.

Louise's West and the Bell in consecutive nights. Seems like you'd have to try to hit the Bell, Louise's I can see somewhat. Did they signal properly?

Maybe it was that brilliant KU football player, DION RAYFORD, coming back to finish off the job. Remember him, he got pissed and got stuck in the drive through window when the chalupa he ordered did not come soon enough. hahahah

That Taco Bell just jumped out in front of the Jeep like it wanted to die!

Ummmm jaywalker, it wasn't in consecutive nights. Louise's West was on Sunday. Taco Bell early this morning.

Me thinks this sounds like the plot from Maxmum Overdrive "When a mysterious comet passes close within the Earth, machines all over the World come alive and go on homicidal rampages. A group of people in a desolate Truck Stop are held hostage by a gang of homicidal 18-wheelers. The frightened people set out to defeat the killer machines...or be killed by them. Written by Mitchell Huffman " http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091499/plotsummary

Also, this could linked to the whole runaway Toyota thing

And which was based on an original story, "Trucks" by Stephen King.

I thought "Maximum Overdrive" was a Stephen King story. Who is Mitchell Huffman?

Clearly the problem is the lack of lights on buildings at night. You simply can't see them until it's too late to swerve out of their way. Since this would cost too much in energy usage I would suggest building code be changed to select brighter, more florescent paints. Then the city could replace street lights with black lights to help fixed structures stand out prominently in the darkness.

Aw, nuts. Now I've got that song "Funkytown" running through my head...

Poor guy, he was likly just swerving to miss a pot hole, jumped the curb and hit the Bell...

I think it's funny the guy tried to park it just a few blocks away...on the street!! I'm curious to know how this guy would perform on the Wonderlic!

Serious question for anyone.

If you are hammered drunk, hit a car/building/person/etc. why would you not drive away and either get caught or turn yourself in later?

You are going to get a couple minor traffic violations and a little fine as opposed to a DUI.

Seems like a pretty easy decision to me, and it will continue until they start giving out more than a little slap on the wrist.

Brad Maestas 5 years, 1 month ago

How can you be southbound and hit the north side of that Taco Bell? It doesn't really seem possible. There's just the alleyway behind it. The only way you could hit it from 23rd St would be if you careened while westbound and hit the east-facing wall but being southbound, hitting the north wall? What, did he tear through the school field and through the fence or was he just flying through the alleyway?

The case of the car running to the border!

OK, so what place will be targeted next by an automobile. I think Bambino's will get the next car attack

next accident: a hippie tie-dyed '70s VW bus headed northbound on Mass st. will careen out of control, crash through the wall, winding up in the city commission chambers of city hall. the driver will get out and momentously say "Wow mann."

VW buses are the grandfathers of today's SUV's.

50YearResident 5 years, 1 month ago

Looks like people are learning by reading the Journal World on how to avoid a DWI by leaving the sean of the accident. Let the police catch you after you have sobered up. It is just a minor offence then.

bearded_gnome 5 years, 1 month ago

"never hit a building though."

I bet it wanted to!

the hippie bus in the commish chambers would be found to have the following bumperstickers, among others: "bong hits for Astroturf!" "Shout peace!" "Ravens do live behind my house at the Lionsbowl, I've seen them!" "Bush lyied, thousends dyied!" "Cheney=war criminal." and: "Imagine"

words do have consequences. Given the OTS thread about fast food, I bet the driver read it and just had irresistable rage so, that would let the SUV off the hook ... this time.
I bet the driver was also a tea partying, militia member, rich white republican sexist gun toting oppressor of the poor bigot, too!

just couldn't contain himself.

Charge all hit and run drivers with DUI and let them try to prove otherwise.

"Charge all hit and run drivers with DUI and let them try to prove otherwise."

Ah, the old "guilty until proven innocent" approach.

ksjayhawk74 5 years, 1 month ago

Obviously you can't prove a negative.

If someone can't prove that they didn't kill an old lady and hide the body in the desert, it most certainly doesn't mean that they did do it.

local_support 5 years, 1 month ago

How about they make leaving the scene of an accident a mandatory year in jail. No exceptions. 5 years if someone is injured. This is getting ridiculous.
