Police cite driver in connection with overnight Taco Bell crash

No one injured during early-morning incident

Lawrence police officers look over a Jeep Cherokee found on Clifton Court on Wednesday morning, April 21, 2010. It had sustained heavy front end damage and police were investigating whether is was related to an overnight accident at Taco Bell on 23rd street.

Lawrence police Wednesday morning located a vehicle that fits the description of an SUV suspected to be involved in an overnight crash at Taco Bell, 1408 West 23rd St.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl the incident occurred about 2 a.m. Hadl said the vehicle, a burgundy late-model Jeep Cherokee, careened southbound and went straight into the north wall of the business.

The driver of the Jeep then backed the vehicle up and took off. It is unknown if there were any other passengers in the vehicle. Police obtained video from the Taco Bell security cameras and used that to help determine the vehicle’s registration.

Police located the maroon Jeep Cherokee they believe to be involved in the crash on Clifton Court, just northwest of the Taco Bell.

Police issued 20-year-old Lawrence resident Jason Gillam citations for failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.

Hadl said debris from the Jeep was trailing away from the scene in a westward pattern.

The Jeep drove into the wall directly outside the bathroom area of the business. Hadl said no one had been in the bathroom and no one had been injured in the incident.

Hadl said damage to the suspect’s vehicle included heavy driver’s side damage, as well as heavy damage to the right front headlight and turn signal.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
