Statehouse Live: Medical gas bill signed into law

? Gov. Mark Parkinson has signed into law a bill to regulate the installation of medical gas systems.

The legislation was in response to a 2009 incident when a Tonganoxie teen suffered brain damage during a dental procedure in Lawrence.

Austin Stone went to Dr. Kirk Vincent’s office in Lawrence to have his wisdom teeth removed. In a recently filed lawsuit, Stone alleges that oxygen and nitrous oxide lines were crossed during design and construction of Kirk’s office.

Stone currently walks with the help of a cane. He is legally blind and has difficulty hearing.

The new law requires that repairs, maintenance and inspection of medical gas piping systems be done by a person that is licensed under city and county ordinances.
