100 years ago: Regents sticking with football over rugby
From the Lawrence Daily World for April 20, 1910: “The university regents have decided that American football will be played here the next two years under the new, wider-open format, then there will be a decision whether to switch to the game of rugby, which a number of students are demanding. … Two police officers here have resigned after negros passed a petition calling for them to leave because of misconduct. The mayor plans to investigate before accepting the resignations. … The university board of regents has decided that fraternities and sororities will not need to skip the pledging of freshman students until they are sophomores. The issue of pledging came up recently when it was opined that the grades of Greeks were below the standards of the other students and that freshman activity in the groups was helping to cause the lag.”
