40 years ago: Arson torches Kansas Union

A spectacular million-dollar-plus fire apparently touched off by arson activity flashed through the top two floors of the six-level Kansas University student union. Many students pitched in to get as many valuables as possible out of the union building but the loss still was staggering. To this day, no arrests have been made in the case.

What I've heard is that the fire was started by someone with serious mental health issues, and that was the motivation, not politics.

But I understand, KansasPerson, that no proof is all the proof you need to blame a hippie.

Some 60-plus-year-old former hippie, perhaps in Lawrence or perhaps moved away, certainly knows the answer to this mystery! Or knows someone who knows....
