Governor signs into law bill aimed at domestic violence

? Gov. Mark Parkinson on Monday signed into law legislation that is designed to improve tracking of domestic violence cases through the criminal justice system.

The measure was supported by the parents of Jana Mackey, a Kansas University law school student who was murdered in 2008 by her former boyfriend.

“Too many times, crimes are being committed by people who claim to love those that they hurt,” said Parkinson.

“Even worse, these crimes were only being identified by the physical act and not by the underlying cause, blinding our law enforcement, our advocacy groups and our families from the truth about domestic violence in our state. By identifying cases involving domestic violence, this bill goes a long way in helping our courts ensure justice and our communities ensure prevention,” he said.
