Austin, Texas ? Texas left fielder Tim Maitland’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted sixth-ranked Texas past Kansas, 3-2, in the teams’ Big 12 series opener on Friday in front of 6,446 fans at Disch-Falk Field.

Brian Heere and Brett Lisher each had three hits for the Jayhawks.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Texas came up with the tying run on an RBI double by Russell Moldenhauer.

Prior to the ninth, Kansas starting pitcher T.J. Walz had allowed just one run on five hits.

However, the Longhorns came up with back-to-back base hits from Kevin Keyes and Moldenhauer against the Jayhawks, who recently lost stopper Brett Bochy for the season because of an injury.

Kansas fell to 19-11-1 overall, and 3-3-1 in the Big 12, while the Longhorns improved to 24-7 and 8-2.

Texas won the game in the 11th, when pinch hitter Jordan Weymouth tripled with one out and scored on Maitland’s sac fly.

The loss wasted a brilliant pitching effort by Walz. The Kansas junior went 81/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts, taking a no-decision. After allowing a one-out single in the first inning, Walz retired the next 13 hitters.

Entering a bases-loaded jam with one out, sophomore relief pitcher Colton Murray sent the game to extra innings by fanning Jordan Etier and Cohl Walla. Murray, who eventually took the loss, struck out four in 21/3 innings.

Kansas scored its runs on a Tony Thompson sacrifice fly in the third inning and a solo homer by Lisher in the fourth.

Kansas will look to even the series at 2 this afternoon in the second game of the three-game series.
