Three Lecompton City Council incumbents — all write-ins — win re-election

April 7, 2010

Three members of the Lecompton City Council are slated to remain in office, having been re-elected Tuesday as write-in candidates by their fellow city residents.

Jimmy Wilkens, Christy Mallonee and Jennifer Smith all won in Tuesday’s general election for seats the five-member council, which also has an elected mayor. They are to be sworn in May 1 for their additional two-year terms.

Wilkens received 40 votes, Mallonee received 38, and Smith received 36. Fifty-one voters cast ballots, for a turnout rate of 13 percent.

While the election drew no official candidates, all three winners are expected to accept their municipal duties for another two years, City Clerk Sandy Nichols said.

Among other finishers: Dora Jones, 4 votes; Marsha Paslay, 2; Denzel Hackathorn, 2; Danny Sanford, 2; and Jennifer Folks, 2.

Turnout rate of 13 percent? Seriously? Is that the best they can do and is this a typical voter turnout?

Sad indeed.

I used to live there and yea its a typical turnout. They have their "cliques" thats all that town is. If you have a certain name you will do well there, if not you are an outsider. I lived there for 16 years. You don't dare run against the ones who have certain last names. Its pretty pathetic.

I'm not following you Buggie: the Pasley's, Hackathorn's, and Sanford's all have deeper Lecompton roots than Wilkens and Mallonee. Especially the Pasley's and the Hackathorn's.

Ah yes but Pasley's and Mallonee's are very good buddies as is a lot of other families in that town. I lived there for 22 years and know them all well. I just think it is interesting that not one council member could remember to file for for the election and they all had to be write ins! What does that tell you about those on your council!

There is no politics in that town. I know of one mayor who stood against all and actually won in the 80's and couldnt stand the "buddies" as newtiger states perfectly. Its not much of a town anyway. Its now where all the predators go and hide. I was so glad to leave that town. I go back once a year to see a grave of a friend of mine.

Buggie may I ask which Mayor you are referring to? There have a been a couple that have been much better than Paslay!

Christy mallonee has not lived in lecompton all her life, so to say that her name is the reason she is on the city council is not true. I also hope the people who have lived her that didn't feel welcome or not like the town, did they get involved in the community at all or run for mayor or a seat on the city council, and why did you stay so long if you disliked it so much? To answer the ? of why christy for got to be put on the ballot is bec. she is works full time, is a mother to 3 children and is on city council, along with helping the ball association in town. She enjoys doing it all. Any other ?'s

Christy Mallonee is the finest gal I know. She is like a girl scout all growed up that doesn't sell cookies anymore. Lecompton should probably establish a Christy Mallonee holiday. She is the bomb diggity bomb and will probably still be in a seat on that council when she's rockin' a depend!!

The fact is Lecompton is a trashing town that has nobody but inbreds that live there. Be happy that these people have stepped up and want to be on this council as I dont believe anyone else would ever wish this on anybody. BTW- How much are they getting paid??

cmall 8 years, 1 month ago

They are not getting paid enough to want to be on the council for that reason. If you would like to know you can call the city and just ask. And it is no more trashing of a town than any other parts of town you have in lawrence or topeka

Lecompton is the pro-slavery capitol of the world. That is their claim to fame. Just curious how many black people live their or Perry and if there is any how they get treated.
