From the Lawrence Daily World for April 4, 1910: “The mayor and council have designated April 15 as a major date for the local spring cleanup and there is much to be done. However, the annual event always brings about a better city. … The athletic board at KU this morning quieted rugby proponents with a formal declaration of ‘To hell with rugby, we are for American football.’ Tickets to be printed for the season are slated to read ‘Down with English Rugby.’ So far, it appears the issue is settled. … The Lawrence Light Co. has presented evidence that it is losing money on street lights and is asking the city for more favorable financial arrangements. The company said it lost $1,800 last year.”
