Note: After a long run of great style scouting, this is Katy’s last couple. You can still find her on her blog at kansascouture.com. We wish her the very best!
Time in Lawrence: Four years.
Occupation: Textile design student.
What were you doing when scouted: Getting a coffee at Henry’s on Eighth.
How would you describe your style: Not a lot of color. A lot of texture. Definitely lots of neutrals, but not earth tones. Always black.
Who are your fashion influences: I get inspiration from thumbing through tons of magazines. I’m addicted to buying magazines. I’ll do tailoring for people, and they’ll pay me in magazines. I have stacks and stacks of them. It’s sick. Also, being in textiles, I watch a lot of runway shows. The shows will be colorful and trendy, and then the designer will come out in something simple and chic. They always look a little disheveled. I love that. I like what the designers themselves throw together at the last minute.
What are your favorite fashion trends: I like trends on other people. I’m really into oversized knits paired with skinny bottoms. I like balancing big tops with small bottoms and vice versa. So many things are in style right now from ’90s prep to grunge. I feel like you have to try really hard to not be at least a little bit fashionable.
What are your least-favorite fashion trends: It really bugs me when people don’t dress appropriately for the weather. Like today, I’ve seen so many people in T-shirts and flip-flops. It’s nice, but it’s not 70 degrees. There’s still snow on the ground. People are so quick to judge others, they don’t take the time to look at what they’re wearing. I don’t really know who has the authority to say what looks good and what doesn’t.
What would you like to see more of in Lawrence: More guys dressing up when they go out on dates with their girlfriends. The girl always look so cute in her little black dress and heels, and the guy will be wearing khakis, a polo and Sperry Top-Siders. Guys in Lawrence don’t know how to dress up.
What would you like to see less of in Lawrence: Less white tube socks and less athletic socks in general, unless you’re running or at the gym.
People say I look like: My dad in high school. He has a uniform he’s been wearing since high school — dark wash jeans, fitted tees and tennis shoes. He doesn’t wear a lot of extras. I think that shows someone has style, when they can wear the same uniform and always look good.
Tell us a secret: Conditioner is horrible for your hair. The less you wash and condition it, the better it looks.

Jeans: Cheap Monday, purchased at Hobbs last July for $30.
Boots: J Brand, purchased at Habitat in Kansas City for $90.
Bag: Jack Spade, purchased at Nordstrom four years ago for $120.
Ring: Christmas gift from local jewelry designer Richinda Brower.
Sunglasses: Vintage deadstock Ray-Bans, Christmas gift from a romantic interest.
