25 years ago: Low turnout expected for local elections

Evidence was that the voter turnout here for the local elections would run less than 30 percent, an all-too-common status with the local electorate in local voting years. In Douglas County, the voter rolls showed 34,000 registered. One of the major issues was a $600,000 amount to set up a new recreational site in Holcom Park.

A culture-growing operation that involved a Lawrence Culture Farms Inc. unit had attracted the interest of the Federal Trade Commission as a possible Ponzi scheme, investigators said. Officials of the local operation at 2220 Del. could not be reached for comment. The Journal-World had learned that culture activities were under investigation in at least seven states.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to let Texas A & M University ban from campus a homosexual student group. The university said it was planning an appeal.

The county commission delayed for a month whether a proposal to allow more water-skiing on Lone Star Lake would sink or swim. Lone Star was a county-owned lake.
