Local parents get grant to expand, improve ‘Walking School Bus’ program

Leaders of an effort to help encourage children to walk safely to school will get $3,000 — and more — to help push the process forward.

Amerika Grewal, a member of the Sunflower School PTO’s Health and Safety Committee, learned Monday afternoon that Safe Kids USA had approved her grant application.

The $3,000 check is expected to arrive this week by FedEx.

“It’s more than just money,” said Grewal, whose committee works in partnership with Safe Kids Douglas County. “They’re giving us expertise, and it’s the guidance that’s as valuable — if not more valuable — than the allocated funds.”

Grewal has been busy organizing so-called “Walking School Bus” programs since the end of the last school year, when the Lawrence school district cut much of its financing for bus transportation.
