Physical aches and suffering

lend themselves reluctantly

to poetic expression, our

expectations from the art

being pleasant reaction.

But the versifier, ill,

covets distraction and thus

takes pen in trembling hand

and reaches out to others

in hope the stretch may

ease the loneliness of pain.

— John Clifford lives in Lawrence.
