100 years ago: KU sees influx of graduate students
From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 27, 1909: “An unusually large number of students who have done some work at other institutions of higher learning have enrolled at Kansas University this year. More than a hundred applicants for advance degrees are here this fall and KU is fast becoming a university noted for graduate studies. … The county fair closed last night after a highly successful run and though final figures are not in, the fair made money, enough to cover any past debts and to perhaps bank some funds for coming years. Many worked hard and long to make this happen and it is a source of pride. A major attraction was that the opening of the street car line events and the transportation they provided caused many to turn out and enjoy the many events. … Local schools are so crowded that in some cases there will be half-day schedules. Every fourth grade is overcrowded and this will get the first attention. … Gov. Stubbs explained to local citizens why the state is needing more tax money and how everyone must share the burden. He drew little criticism because of his thorough explanation.”
