Basic needs

Most not-for-profit agencies are having trouble meeting the needs of their clients right now, but cuts announced this week in the Senior Meals Program operated by Douglas County Senior Services seem particularly tough.

Lack of funding has prompted DCSS to cap its weekday meal deliveries at the current 250 people, meaning it will be unable to add new clients until someone else drops out. In addition the agency has had to end weekend meal deliveries to 25 to 30 homebound Douglas County seniors.

The hope, of course, is that these people will be able to find another way to meet their nutritional needs over the weekend, but the elimination of this service is worrisome. People don’t seek such a service unless they really need it, and their options for dealing with missed meals may be limited. The canceled meal deliveries conjure up all sorts of heartbreaking images of hungry homebound seniors.

DCSS, of course, would welcome financial support for the meals program. Those who wish to help can come to the Lawrence Senior Center, call 842-0543 or visit dgcoseniorservices.org. In the current economy, this is only one of many local needs, but we hope someone in the community will step up to meet it.
