Kayla and Cribb Altman IV, Dallas, announce the birth of their daughter, Halston Anne Altman, on Sept. 14, 2009, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

Halston’s maternal grandparents are Steve and Patsy Huffman, Lawrence; her paternal grandparents are Pam Altman and Cribb Altman III, both of Dallas. Her great-grandparents are Dean and Rosalie Burkhead and Don and Kathy Gillihan, all of Lawrence.

Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, announces Lawrence students earning bachelor’s degrees at the conclusion of the 2009 spring semester. The commencement ceremony was May 16.

Students were Kristen Longanecker, music education; Emily Nitcher, art history; and Meghan Shanks, physics.


The School of Education at Kansas University announces area students honored during its May 16 convocation. Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education, presented the awards.

Michael Brown, Lawrence, received an award for Outstanding Master’s Project for “Breaking the ties that bind: A narrative approach to understanding and treating sexual addiction.” The honor included a cash award. Brown received his master’s degree from the Department Psychology and Research in Education this spring.

Meghan Miller, Ottawa, was one of 13 graduating seniors who received senior leadership awards recognizing exemplary leadership through involvement in school, university and/or community activities. Each received an engraved pewter Jayhawk statue.


Lynne Stahl, daughter of Susan and Saul Stahl of Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the 2009 spring semester at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, by earning at least a grade-point average of 3.75.


Ted Sharp, formerly of Lawrence, will celebrate his 100th birthday today. Friends are invited to attend a cake and ice cream celebration at 1 p.m. today at Larksfield Place Auditorium, 7373 E. 29th St. North in Wichita. Cards may be sent to Sharp at the Larksfield address, Apt. W 103.


Caroline Houston Bauer, daughter of Gene and Judy Bauer, Lawrence, graduated May 24 cum laude and with high honors in anthropology from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. Among her honors, Bauer was awarded the Sally Montgomery Individual Prize in Community-Based Learning. She now lives and works in New York City.


Brent Mowery, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for 2009 spring semester at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, by earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.


Alexandra Hyler, a recent Lawrence High School graduate, was awarded a $1,000 higher education scholarship by Hy-Vee Inc. in May. She will attend Kansas University this fall and works part time at the Lawrence Hy-Vee at 3504 Clinton Parkway.

Hyler was chosen for the award based on academic achievements and demonstrated interest in school and community activities.

Pittsburg State University announces area students named to the All-A honor roll for the 2009 summer sessions, by earning a 4.0 grade-point average. Area students on the list are: Amanda Vander Tuig, Baldwin City; Jordan Hevel, De Soto; Brittany Pittman, Eudora; Amanda Chavez and Marissa Ballard, Lawrence; and Emily Schenk and Kyle Norris, Tonganoxie.

A total of 83 Kansas counties will be represented by youth competing at the 77th annual Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS) this weekend at the Kansas Coliseum in Wichita.

Local youths participating are Nikki-Lee Aguilar, Jessye Schumann and Wyatt Schumann, Lecompton; Grace Baxter, Overbrook; Bailey Brown, Christopher Brown, Caleb Flory, MacKenzie Flory, Taylor Stanley, Troy Stanley, Emma Stewart, Reilly Stewart, Griffin Weheman and Gunther Weheman, Baldwin City; Taylor Davis, Tonganoxie; Lacey Hunsinger, Tyler Kapelle, Coy Leming, Taylor Springer and Holly Swearingen, Lawrence; Alexis Leonard and Justin Leonard, Eudora; Kelsey Wulfkuhle and Madison Wulfkuhle, Berryton.


The Campus Ledger, the student newspaper of Johnson County Community College, won first place in an onsite contest sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press.

The best of show award was given for overall excellence in newspapers at two-year schools at the ACP’s National College Journalism Workshops on July 26 in Minneapolis.

John Young of Lawrence, photo and online editor, attended the Minneapolis workshops.


Lauren Pipkin, Lawrence, was inducted in Alpha Epsilon Delta, the national health preprofessional honor society, at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. Pipkin is a member of the class of 2011.


William Pendleton, Lawrence, was awarded the annual Lisa Ramos Bland Memorial Scholarship by The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).

GCSAA sponsors the annual grant named after Bland, a longtime GCSAA staff member who was killed in an auto accident Sept. 16, 2000. Pendleton graduated from Lawrence High School in May and is a student at Kansas State University.

Pendleton, an honor roll student at Lawrence High, was selected to the National Honor Society and was a Lawrence Sister City exchange student to Germany during high school. He has been active in 4-H, serving as club president and earning the 4-H state award in entomology as well as a Kansas Key Award. Pendleton was involved with the Peer Education Leadership Board, Bullies to Buddies, Youth Against Drinking Alcohol, Students Teaching About Tobacco, FYI Club, Link Crew, Outdoor Leadership Experience, Environmental Club, German Club, cross country, swim team, track and field, marching band, symphonic band, jazz band, pep band a cappella choir and choral. He has also volunteered with the Jubilate Choir and Cantor at St. John Church, Meals on Wheels, Lawrence Arts Center preschool fundraiser Santa’s Workshop, Relay for Life, River City Reading Festival and Red Cross blood drive.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be a member of a Catholic parish in Douglas County, a graduate or graduating senior of a Douglas County high school and be accepted to or currently enrolled in a post-secondary learning institution.
