25 years ago: Prison escapees captured

Citizens in the area rested more easily after five Kansas prison escapees, three of them convicted of murder, were all caught and returned to their cells.

Some sites in the Lawrence area had morning temperatures of around 33 degrees as autumn made a firm statement about its arrival in the region.

Several overgrown local yards had created a controversy about the local weed removal ordinance and how it needed to be enforced more stringently. The city stepped in and cleaned out three yards and charged the action to the owners, which aroused not only the owners by civil rights leaders.

A new grant of more than $50,000 in federal funds was expected to open the doors for new homes and more independent living for 16 mentally challenged Cottonwood, Inc., clients in Lawrence.

City commissioners agreed to further investigate a proposal to refinance outstanding water and sewer bond debts, allowing the city to pay them off early and save nearly $480,000. Mayor Ernest Angino explained the benefit of such a move and strongly endorsed it.
