100 years ago: Men mugged in alleyway

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 26, 1909: “Two men who brought a carload of sheep here to sell were robbed last night in a dark alley. They were flush with money from their sales and lost at least $285 as far as they can tell. They met two women and went into the alley for immoral purposes and later they found their billfolds had been taken. … Ten new cases of infantile paralysis have developed in the Norton-Decatur county district and there are at least 50 new cases of the mysterious killing disease which seems to be spreading rapidly.”
