Don’t bake the cake just yet.

A group of area history buffs still wants to throw a grand party in Lawrence to celebrate the state’s 150th birthday in 2011, but a meeting Thursday afternoon did not produce a clear plan to do so.

“I think we’re hearing people say it is a fabulous idea, but we still need somebody to step forward and organize it,” said Clenece Hills, a semiretired Lawrence school teacher who has been promoting the idea of such an event.

Thursday’s meeting drew about 25 people to the Lawrence Public Library to discuss the idea. Hills, a past chair of the city’s Sesquicentennial Commission, has been urging people to think of having a pageant-style event at Sesquicentennial Point near Clinton Lake.

Participants in the meeting said they liked that idea, but said a formal group is needed that could raise money and officially approach the Douglas County Commission and the various city governments for support.

Several meeting participants suggested that contact be made with groups such as Leadership Lawrence, the Douglas County Historical Society and various history groups in other parts of the county.

“It really needs to be countywide, in my mind,” said Douglas County Commissioner Jim Flory. “Having Baldwin, Eudora and Lecompton involved in this is critical.”

Group members agreed to start making contacts, and agreed to meet again on Oct. 29 at the library. A time for the meeting will be announced later.
