KU's Taylor treated at hospital
KU's Tyshawn Taylor was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a reported incident outside the Burge Union on the KU campus. Taylor was treated and released Tuesday evening. Enlarge video
Kansas guard Tyshawn Taylor charges up the court after a steal during the first half Friday, March 27, 2009 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Kansas University sophomore basketball guard Tyshawn Taylor was involved — and injured — in an incident that broke out in front of Burge Union on the KU campus shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, a source confirmed Tuesday night.
A nursing supervisor confirmed that Taylor was treated and released Tuesday night at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
A source close to the situation said Taylor suffered a dislocated left thumb and would be out of action three to four weeks. The basketball season begins with the Oct. 16 Late Night in the Phog.
A source said several people witnessed a skirmish between members of the KU football team and basketball team. The identities of the other players involved were not known as of Tuesday night.
It is believed no players except Taylor sustained injuries that would require any missed playing time.
KU associate athletic director Jim Marchiony was asked about the matter on Tuesday night.
“We’re aware of reports of an incident, and we are gathering facts as we speak,” Marchiony said.
KU coach Bill Self was on a recruiting trip and unavailable for comment.
Police were called to Jayhawker Towers about 10:25 p.m. Tuesday to disperse a crowd of about 20 individuals gathering in the parking lot of the Towers. The Journal-World police scanner indicated it was in response to the incident that happened earlier in the day.
“I don’t know much. All I know is a fight happened (in front of union),” a KU student said before entering a Towers apartment.
A source said one group of players was entering the union as another group of players was exiting, arguing ensued, and punches were thrown. Police had no comment on the matter Tuesday night.
As of Tuesday night, KU public safety officials had not returned calls for comment.

For the record, I had nothing to do with this in order to speed up the comment ticker. I paid no players to say anything about the other team right at that moment. I had no idea the two teams would be in areas what so ever. I, nor do my children even KNOW any KU players, not for a few years anyway.
Cross my heart and I have no interest in winning those free ultra cool game tickets.

This ain't small putatus, folks. There's an axiom in college sports that says the more your football team improves, the longer the arrest record gets. I'm not sayin' this isn't Taylor's fault, don't know, he is a Jersey guy and he's a tough, not gonna back down. But this isn't the kind of thing KU has ever been known for, and it ain't good pub any way you slice it. I hope this turns out to be much ado about nothing but it doesn't feel like it.

If it is correct that the fight broke out between members of the football and basketball teams, that's a disgrace to KU.
Dang it boys; try acting like men, wil ya? Oh wait-stuff like that happens in the NBA and NFL, too.
Once it is determined exactly which players were involved, I'd like to see some serious corrective action taken. Perhaps missing a game or two? How about being forced to scrub the floor of Allen Fieldhouse with toothbrushes, or some serious cleaning and maintenance work at the stadium? Silly-maybe. But wouldn't it burn off some of that excess testosterone?

Tyshawn, if you hurt your thumb throwing the punch, you did it wrong. Keep your thumb on the outside of the fist, and hit with the part of your hand where the fingers are flat when curled. But definitely keep your thumb out of your fist.

I expect poor judgment and mistakes from young people in college. With that being said, I would hope that all the parties involved would be brought in front of Lew, Coach Self, and Coach Mangino, and given a nice a*s ripping, by all three, together, to show their united disgust in this happening.
Secondly, all the guilty parties should be brought in front of the respective teams, together, and made to apologize. If any of the parties involved were team captains, they should be stripped of that title immediately.
Lastly, all the guilty parties should have to help clean up the football stadium stands after the next four home football games, and then four of the home basketball games ala Joe Paterno punishment.

Even if provoked, Tyshawn's ignorant posts on Facebook are enough to get him suspended for a couple of games, if not charged with assault. And the street/thug lingo is not making him look too bright - don't care if you are from Jersey or Junction City.
Upperclassmen (Sherron and Cole) - restore order and teach these underclassmen how to represent themselves and the university. Since that wasn't done, now HCBS has to make a statement and teach a lesson. I've always been a big Tyshawn fan, but this shows how much he still has to grow.

With all the former KU heavyweights on the Staff now (Hadl, Sayers, Manning) maybe there ought to be a “woodshed” meeting within “The Department” about what “image” and “civility” mean. My guess, it might be a little harder to raise the stadium East Side renovation money now!
Probably helps Self on his recruiting trip; I'm sure prospective players and parents will be glad to see that the basketball team has some off-court toughness.

New idea; since the basketball and football venues are now housed across campus from each other and don't share practice, training and playing facilities, maybe the time has come to move the football players Northward. When they renovate the stadium East side, simply enclose and make a football dorm there. The Burge Union could be reserved for Basketball, Baseball, Softball, etc., Main Union for Football and Bowling.
The main campus would be a “neutral zone” for academics. We could have “North” and “South” Divisions within one school; NCAA mike like this concept. Can you imagine the $ generated from clashes of inter-University competitions between (like) Florida Basketball vrs. Florida Football.

My theory: Many of the problems with basketball players has to do with where they come from. Not saying that the KU issues are related to basketball alone; but KU has not had nearly as many problems when Basketball AVOIDS recruiting from large (primarily Midwestern and Eastern) inter-cities. Bill seems to spend a lot of time dealing with kids from those locales.

For acting like a thug Tyshawn obviously doesn't know how to throw a punch if he dislocated his thumb while doing it.
That is exactly why your thumb is supposed to remain outside of your clinched fist. Thankfully he didn't break his hand though because I doubt he also knew to hit only with his two main knuckles.
If you're going to act like a thug at least do it right.

I love it when KU fans call K-State players thugs lololol How about this summer when the one drunk KU football player jumped on the other drunk KU football player's car. The driver sped around the parking lot on campus and threw the other thug off and sent him to the hospital. Of course all of this was swept under the rug by cheating Sweet Lew and the KU Star. Looks like the women's basketball team might lose another scholarship over this like when they did for the football and men's basketball team's “Lack of Institutional Control” NCAA probation. I am dumbfounded. There's plenty of room in the Jayhawk tent for football and basketball. I used to wait impatiently for months on end for the basketball season to start. Now we have Sparky and Co to cheer on, which has been nothing but a treat. This kinda deflates my sails—for both programs. Here we are, like knaves and fools, spending our money and cheering on both teams, and the morons, behind the scenes, are fighting each other over nonsense.
I can't imagine Magino or Self to be the type that would allow such an environment tof animus to linger.
If Kegan is right—that this is not the first time—then the blame lies soley with Lew. I can't help but think this would have never happened if he would have been proactive in light of earlier reported incidents.
If discipline is to be meted out, Lew should be amongst those called to task.
What a shame, and so meaningless—and avoidable.

Anyway, I don't like giving anyone (MU or K-State) any material to goof on us, and I want our players to represent the University of Kansas in the manner the University deserves. Clearly, what happened last night and earlier day is not my idea of “representing”. Having said all of this, I trust Coach Self and Coach Mangino and I firmly believe these incidents are behind us.
