Lawrence Habitat ReStore, 708 Conn., threw itself a party marking its fourth anniversary in the same way a kid might celebrate a fourth birthday: with balloons, prizes, cake and live music.

Hundreds of community members enjoyed the festive atmosphere and took advantage of the ReStore’s 40 percent off sale Saturday.

ReStore Committee Chair Michelle Mailand said the store, which sells used building products, appliances and furniture, had some good reasons to celebrate.

Mailand said that during the first two years of operations, the nonprofit store — which moved from its west Lawrence facility to its present location in April — lost money as it struggled to gain community visibility.

But over the last two years, the store has been able to channel profits to the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, in its 20th year.

The store has also kept 300 tons of used materials from going to landfills, and Mailand said the Lawrence area has rallied behind the store’s efforts.

“The public is helping us in our mission,” she said, adding that the event was also a way for the agency to thank supporters and donors.

Mailand said that with the bad economy, the ReStore is seeing a dip in donations and revenue, but the store offers shoppers an affordable option for home repairs and projects.

Lawrence resident Eliza Bullock recently began shopping at the ReStore, and said she’s been impressed.

“They have a great selection,” she said. “You can actually find lots of treasures.”

Fellow shopper Tony Hayden was at the store with his family Saturday, and he said the ReStore makes sense for him when looking for materials for home projects.

“It costs less and you’re recycling,” he said.

Store employees said the event and sale helped the ReStore sell about four times as much as on a regular Saturday.

The ReStore is open to the public Mondays through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
